Neville Aysgarth's family history is based on that of H.H. Asquith, the Liberal Prime Minister, who was in office at the start of the First Wotld War. Dido is based on Margot Asquith, who was just as eccentric in real life. Venetia is based on Venetia Stanley, with whom Asquith had a rather unclear relationship. He wrote her letters about secret wartime stuff - scandalous risks indeed!

Susan Howatch used this technique of resetting historical events in her early family saga novels.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827071479314474893.post-63340117126411746482023-05-13T10:16:40.138-07:002023-05-13T10:16:40.138-07:00Nice post thanks for shharingNice post thanks for shharingKabob Recipeshttps://www.kabobdishes.com/kabob/chicken_kabobs_on_the_grill_6415390912.shtmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827071479314474893.post-72058643852683008052022-11-17T20:42:25.747-08:002022-11-17T20:42:25.747-08:00He was great, especially when I consulted him abou...He was great, especially when I consulted him about a thesis. I like to think that the span from 2016 to 2020, when things went so grievously agley, as you put it, are a necessary part of our growing pains. Not because we deserve the pain, but perhaps through it, we will learn some needed lessons and emerge from our collective tribulations with a better understanding of what it is to live in society as an integral part of its fabric, and in greater harmony with the warp and weft of it all. We're certainly not there yet, but at least some part of the tide has turned. We're living through transformative times, for sure.
I hope the turn of this year also brings you fruitful insights and greater harmony, John. Happy New Year. :)
Teramishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03349734389760028739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827071479314474893.post-11706216775131540032020-12-01T05:08:27.981-08:002020-12-01T05:08:27.981-08:00'...just show up and do our part. Their bad reputation some from the fallout after the fall of Rome. C.S Lewis actually has mounted a defense of the Middle Ages as a time of glorious literary flowering, just very. Different from one preceded and followed it in his book The Discarded Image. My original question was prompted by the idea that I have always thought of the dark ages as repressive and horrific but I guess the question I've never been able to understand is that given presumably God guides the church, how was the largest part of Christian history so bad? Would the ordinary person in the middle ages be merely subject to a daily dose of fear from their spiritual leaders? Or is this an unfair characterisation of that era?Peter Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09878882069745209735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2827071479314474893.post-22792317441029791812020-04-12T09:56:05.240-07:002020-04-12T09:56:05.240-07:00Oh, that’s a great pair of questions, Peter!
So:
...Oh, that’s a great pair of questions, Peter!

So:

1. Liberal Anglo-Catholics tend to be drawn more to the Ante-Nicene writings, but medieval theology and devotional writing is greatly prized by some of us. So, for example, much of St. Augustine’s writing—especially his Confessions and City of God—resonate with me, as do the Revelations of Divine Love by Julian of Norwich. Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of England has some marvelous bits in it, too—the parable of life as a swallow flying into, through and out of a mead-hall is my favorite, and St. Anselm too. (Re Julian: She was an accomplished spiritual director as the account of her meeting with Margery Kempe shows; Kempe tended toward over-emotionalism, and her account of Julian hauling her onto the rails is quite striking.) Also, an upvote for Meister Eckhart and Richard Rolle, as well as Catherine of Siena.

2. Jedi Counsel of Christian thinkers? Hmm...keeping to the original number of 12:

1. St John the Divine;
2. Julian of Norwich;
3. St. Augustine;
4. Richard Hooker-seriously, he’s brilliant.
5. W.R. Inge;
6. Charles Gore;
7. Evelyn Underhill;
8. C.S. Lewis;
9. John Keble;
10. Barbara Crafton;
11. Christopher Bryant;
12. Nadia Bolz-Weber

You’ll see that my list is weighted forward the mystics and toward Anglicans, but that’s where I’ve found my spiritual nourishment. So, one man’s batting order.Anglocathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03218740053628978255noreply@blogger.com
